The Google Pixel 2's single-lens portrait mode is now available on older Google smartphones, the company has announced. Charles Chow, who developed the Camera NX Google camera mod, has revealed that he has extended the functionality to the original Google Pixel phone, along with the Nexus 5X and 6P. Writing in Chromloop, Chow says the Pixel 2's bokey-inducing portrait mode has only been tested on the Nexus 5X, but should work on the 6P and original Pixel as well. The Google Pixel 2, which is DxOMark's highest rated smartphone camera, eschews the typical dual-lens arrangement to produce the portrait mode's fake bokeh look and instead relies on machine learning and depth data from the image sensor.
